With DiscoverNEPA.com, he envisions Northeastern Pennsylvania’s 10 counties working together to build an enduring legacy as a business-friendly region with a talented, knowledgeable, and ready-to-go workforce.
DiscoverNEPA.com serves as a marketing tool for local companies and economic development organizations to recruit skilled workers and attract new businesses. NEPA’s 18 colleges and universities can use it to build interest among prospective students, and regional healthcare institutions can utilize the site to recruit top medical professionals to the area.
Mericle first launched DiscoverNEPA® via social channels such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram in October 2017 and is already building a committed following. While DiscoverNEPA.com promotes a lot of the same content, it dives much deeper into the 10-counties that make up Northeastern Pennsylvania.
The site promotes thousands of amenities from restaurants and shops to state parks, hiking trails, and everything in between. DiscoverNEPA.com features photography, videos, articles, and a robust calendar of events. Visitors to the recently fully launched site can explore the great communities that make up the region and find ways to support local and regional businesses as well as many of NEPA’s outstanding non-profit organizations. The site also highlights key lifestyle factors like healthy living, education, and conservation.
Ultimately, the goal of DiscoverNEPA.com is to shine a spotlight on the many benefits of living, working, and doing business in NEPA.
For Mericle President and Founder, Robert K. Mericle, it all comes down to three words: quality of life. He was inspired to create DiscoverNEPA.com when realizing that article after article and one survey after another cited quality of life as one of the most important factors in the corporate site selection process. “One survey of hundreds of corporate decision makers by Area Development Magazine listed quality of life as the third most important factor behind only highway access and the availability of skilled labor,” said Mericle. “We felt more needed to be done to tout our many amenities to national business leaders.”
Mericle believes DiscoverNEPA.com will help the region retain and attract skilled workers and make the area more attractive to companies.
“The scarcity of skilled workers allows them to be very mobile,” continued Mericle. “They often move to areas commonly known as great places to live because they are confident they can find a job almost anywhere. We want these workers to view Northeastern Pennsylvania not only as one of the best places to live, but also as a place where they could enjoy their work and put down roots.”
Taking a regional approach is key for Mericle. “Rarely do companies contact us saying they want to be in Wilkes-Barre or Scranton,” Mericle said. “They start by focusing on larger regions such as the I-81 / I-78 Corridor, then narrow their searches based upon the availability of real estate near highways, labor availability, quality of life, business costs, and other factors. We first need to get them interested in NEPA before we have a chance of getting them to create jobs in any of our individual communities.”
